Savings goal calculator
Work out how much to save toward a target, how long a plan could take, or what it could reach. Set contribution timing and growth assumptions.

How this tool works
A useful savings plan connects three quantities: the amount you want, the time available, and the contributions you can make. This calculator can solve for any one of those outcomes while keeping the other assumptions visible.
Use it to estimate a required recurring contribution, find the duration of an existing contribution plan, or project the balance at the end of a chosen term. Calculations run locally in your browser.
Inputs and definitions
- Goal amount is the balance you want to reach. It must be greater than zero.
- Starting amount is money already assigned to the goal before future contributions begin.
- Annual interest rate is a nominal estimate such as 5 for 5%. Negative rates are allowed but receive a warning because they reduce the projected balance.
- Term sets the available duration. In time-to-goal mode it acts as the maximum search period.
- Recurring contribution is entered for time-to-goal and projected-balance modes. Choose its frequency and whether it arrives at the beginning or end of each period.
An annual contribution increase models a planned step-up after each completed year. Currency and number-format controls affect presentation only and never convert values.
Methodology
next balance = current balance + scheduled contribution + interest for the compounding periodThe projection uses the same deterministic event timeline as the compound interest calculator. That matters when the contribution frequency and compounding frequency differ, because each event is applied in chronological order.
Required-contribution mode searches for a recurring amount whose projected ending balance falls within the displayed precision tolerance. Time-to-goal mode checks monthly checkpoints up to the selected maximum duration and reports the first checkpoint at or above the target.
Assumptions
- The entered rate, frequencies, and timing remain unchanged for the full projection.
- Scheduled contributions occur in full, with an annual increase applied only after a completed year.
- All inputs use one currency and intermediate calculations keep decimal precision before display rounding.
Worked examples
Find the monthly contribution for a one-year goal
Start with 1,000 and aim for 2,200 after one year with a 0% rate and end-of-month contributions.
Find the remaining amount
The target is 1,200 above the starting balance. With no assumed growth, contributions must supply the entire difference.
Spread it across the term
Twelve equal monthly contributions divide the remaining 1,200 into amounts of 100.
The required contribution is 100 per month and the projected ending balance is 2,200.
Estimate how long a fixed contribution takes
Begin at zero, contribute 100 at the end of every month, assume 0% growth, and set a target of 1,200.
Accumulate each contribution
At a zero rate, each month adds exactly 100 to the projected balance.
Find the first target checkpoint
The balance is 1,100 after month 11 and first reaches 1,200 at month 12.
The goal is reached in 12 months with a projected balance of 1,200.
Limitations and common mistakes
This is a planning estimate, not financial advice or a guaranteed outcome. Real savings and investment products can have changing rates, losses, fees, taxes, minimum balances, and transaction rules that are not represented here.
Inflation, withdrawals, missed contributions, employer matching, and currency conversion are excluded. A goal that is reached in nominal terms may have different purchasing power by the time it is reached.
Frequently asked questions
Which calculation mode should I use?
Choose required contribution when the target and term are fixed, time to goal when the target and contribution are fixed, or projected balance when the contribution and term are fixed.
What if the goal is already funded?
If the starting amount already meets or exceeds the goal, the required contribution and time needed are zero. The result keeps the current balance visible.
Why can contribution timing change the result?
With a positive rate, a contribution made at the beginning of a period can earn during that period. The same contribution at the end cannot earn until a later period.
Does changing currency convert the amounts?
No. Currency selection changes symbols and number formatting only. Enter every monetary value in the same currency.
